Let’s face it, we all make mistakes, especially when it concerns auto repair.  Who knows about car stuff?   Not i, that’s for sure.  So when my windshield cracked to the point of danger, i admit, i panicked.  

Since i had no idea what to do, i looked up autoglass repair on google.  I contacted 3 companies via email.      

 ** One Never Responded

** The First One I Spoke With Offered Me $100 To Come Out And Fix My Windshield, With That I Was Sold

** The third company called me too, and i spoke with one of the guys.  Seemed really nice and great service but i wanted my $100.  He warned me about those scams.  But i wasn’t gonna fall for his scams. So i went with my gut and took the money.  That was my mistake.

*I’m not saying that they didn’t have good service, but the aftermath, that ended up costing me more money.  AND ALL FOR AN OFFER.

After about 2 weeks post the initial auto glass replacement, I noticed a small fracture in my glass.  When i took a closer look, “oh Chip!!” I gasped.  It was a deep wound, one someone would consider dangerous to drive with.  So of  course I took it right back to auto glass co number 2, the one with the free offer.  Turns out they were not a preferred vendor of my insurance, therefore i was going to get billed.  

Long story short.. my windshield got replaced.  Not by the fraud company, but by AGD Auto Glass & Tint Co.  Luckily AGD was a preferred and covered vender.

At the end of the day, my greediness and lack of research actually costed me $150.  That was after I gave back the $100 because the total billed to my insurance company was $250, that I didn’t even know wasn’t covered..  All the hassle when I could have just gone to AGD in the first place to get a windshield that was free and chipfree for lifetime.. duh.  Lesson Learned.

When I moved out to Arizona from Chicago in 2008, it was pretty much the first time I was on my own.  No help from my parents, my clients, nobody.. just me myself and I.  I learned a ton of new things that very first year on my own, including how to truly be an adult and take ownership of everything in my life.

I had to pay rent, and health insurance, my cell phone and even my car insurance all on my own.  But I was up and ready for the challenge.

I had always been under my mom’s insurance plan, or let’s just say she paid and took care of it for me.  So this was a first for me. It was actually pretty easy as my State Farm Rep in Illinois just referred me to an Arizona rep. She changed all of my information and also added features that aren’t required in Illinois but are important when living in Arizona.  One of those was glass coverage, and I didn’t understand why, but I accepted anyway. Then during my very first week while getting a car wash, a worker tried to sell me on window replacement.  He pointed out the crack, and I saw it, but I didn’t have time that day to even schedule.  So I planned on fixing it later, especially because State Farm would pay.

Long story short, I was financially stable when I first moved out here. Within one year, I was terminated from my job, and had a very difficult time finding a new one.  With the loss of income, my first thought was to figure out how to live for less.  Of Course, my auto insurance was something to look at.  I got a quote from Geico and I couldn’t believe how much I could save.  It was actually like the commercial  ..haha.  Immediately I switched it over to Geico.  I honestly didn’t even care about my coverage, i just wanted it to be cheap.  I also was able to cut funds by cancelling unnecessary services like my tanning, which made me sad, but i had to review need vs want in my current financial situation.

It took me about 6 months, but I scored interviews and eventually got a new job. During my very first week, while driving for training in the morning, a rock flew up and hit my windshield.  I was like “OH CHIP!” and all of a sudden my vision was distorted.  I pulled right on over to the side of the road, got out of my car and I saw something I had never seen before.  I had actually forgotten about what the car wash man had told me over a year ago.. “Get your windshield Replaced”  Well, I forgot and I never did it.  

The outcome:  Basically that one rock, flew up and hit the exact spot of the chip, which slightly shattered the look of my entire front windshield.  It looked like the glass was broken from the inside, and severely impaired my vision.  I was able to make it to my new job luckily, and while i was there i made a few phone calls about replacing my windshield since I knew my insurance had it covered.

The first company I spoke to was so nice.  They called Geico for me while i was on hold to verify, then were gonna even come out to my work and fix it in the parking lot.  When the man got back on the phone, he exclaimed, “Ma’am, you don’t have windshield insurance coverage on your Geico policy.   And then it hit me, “I changed my policy” OH NO!!  After an hour on the phone with Geico, begging and pleading with them to upgrade my policy as of now, they denied it.  My window needed to be replaced.

I called the first company back to find out pricing with no insurance.  I was astounded to hear how expensive it was.  I told them I would call them back. Then i got back on the phone and started calling local autoglass shops in tempe. Most of them were around the same price.  Then I called a place that a friend referred me to, AGD Auto Glass & Tint Co.  Sure enough, the price was less, a lot less, actually half the price of the other quotes.  So I hired AGD and just like the other place, they came out to me while i was at work. They did a great job so it was worth the money.
